PS WOOD MACHINES
There’s a commercial running on television these days depicting Mattel, the Wright Brothers, Disney and Amazon, all as companies that originated in a garage. Right here in Bethel Park we guess a number of companies can relate.
One such company is PS Wood Machines located at 3032 Industrial Blvd. Barbara Peters, its president, started it in 1994 in her garage, basement and whatever other part of her home was needed to contain the cumbersome scroll saw inventory. It didn’t take long before the business moved to a building in South Park and then to their permanent location on Industrial Blvd. in 2000.
Today, in addition to assembling their 14” and 21” scroll saws, they also turn band saw steel from Sweden into the very popular Timber Wolf® band saw blades. They have their own line of Super SharpsTM scroll saw blades as well as patterns, MDF bowl and tray templates, matching router bits, glue, sandpaper, band saw tires and table inserts. Their accessory lines are ever expanding.
For the past 20 years, Barbara has traveled the USA as well as international travel, promoting her products through trade shows, demonstrations, teaching classes and speaking at club events. Sandwiched into that, she has grown her business to the extent family members have become an integral part. Daughter Beth keeps the office running, son Brad runs the shop; even husband Bill (though retired from his real job) lends a helping hand when needed. Barbara says “her travels have been arduous for 20 years, but she has the best customers in the business – many of whom have become great friends over the years”.
PS Wood sells mostly through approximately 150 dealers around the country. They also sell direct through their web site www.pswood.com, through Amazon.com and Sears.com. They have walk-in-business from locals or customers traveling through, taking the opportunity to stop and say “hi” and pick up a few items. Their free catalog is available by calling 412 831-5402 or on their website.
PS Wood Machines celebrated their 20th anniversary this past April. Per Barb, “it hasn’t been easy, but looking back, the garage days seem eons ago”. Congratulations to Barb Peters and her family, another story of a successful Bethel Park Industrial Park business. Barb is currently Co-President of the Bethel Park Business Assn.
